15. DOES THE US STILL HAVE AN EMBARGO AGAINST CUBA?

Yes.

An embargo is an official ban on trade or other commercial activity with a particular country.  On October 19, 1960, the US Government placed an embargo (prohibition) on all exports to Cuba, except for food and medicine.  Since then, the US Embargo Against Cuba, known in Cuba as el bloqueo ("the blockade”), has grown to consist of a number of Federal statutes and associated regulations that form a commercial, economic, and financial embargo against Cuba.  The Embargo is comprehensive, detailing all prohibited activity - almost all direct or indirect financial activity by any persons or entities subject to US Jurisdiction that involves the Cuban Government, Cuban property, or Cuban nationals – and any exceptions to these restrictions.  Additionally, they are written so that the Executive Branch has the discretion to broaden or narrow certain areas.

For more history about the US Embargo Against Cuba, check out our article HERE.

16. IS IT LEGAL FOR A US CITIZEN TO TRAVEL TO CUBA?

Pursuant to the US Embargo against Cuba, those subject to U.S. jurisdiction are not permitted to travel to Cuba for tourist activities.  However, individuals are permitted to travel to Cuba, if the travel activities qualify under one of the 12 travel categories that are authorized by “general license” by the U.S. Treasury Department, Office of Foreign Asset Control (“OFAC”).

For additional information, please visit the U.S. Department of The Treasury Resource Center Cuba Sanctions webpage.

18. ARE THE GENERAL LICENSE AND THE VISA TO TRAVEL TO CUBA THE SAME DOCUMENT?

A Visa is an authorization from a country’s government to legally enter that specific country.

You can exchange USD for CUC (Cuban Convertible Peso) at any airport, hotel, and exchange bureau in town centers and some banks in Cuba.  Currency cannot be exchanged in the US.  The fee is the same no matter where you exchange your currency.  You will need your Passport to exchange money.   In Cuba, they will not accept bills that are torn or written on when exchanging into CUC.

24. WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE IN CUBA?

Cuba has a tropical climate with warm to hot weather. Natural events such as tropical storms have not generally been a risk to life in Cuba.  However, they can cause interruption to travel plans.  Cuba is very well organized and prepared for such natural events with evacuation procedures for citizens and visitors.

25. WHAT SHOULD I PACK TO PREPARE FOR CUBA?

We suggest that you bring all the items that you will need to feel comfortable on their trip.  You will not be able to go to the “corner store” to purchase items.  It can be difficult and expensive to purchase these items in Cuba.  You should bring your personal items, such as prescription and OTC drugs, washcloths, toothbrush, toothpaste, insect repellant, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, razors, soap, sunscreen, etc.

Make sure to pack clothes and shoes that are appropriate for all aspects of your program, including walking shoes/sneakers, rain gear, a bathing suit and a beach towel.

26. WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO INTERNET IN CUBA?

Yes.  However, it is not like in the United States where you can access internet through your phone’s Data Plan.

You can purchase a WiFi card with a username and password and visit a WiFi Zone where you can access the internet.  The WiFi zones are public places in the city where you can access the internet.  Also, many hotels have a Business Center where you can purchase internet access per hour.
