How can we maintain healthy habits in a bustling, urban environments like New York City and Havana?  During this Diaspora Signature Program, we dig into the concept of wellness in Cuba to learn about health, wellness, farming, and fitness practices in Cuba.  Each day, we’ll have HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) fitness classes to burn calories. Then, we’ll engage with Cuban fitness professionals and regular folks who work out in Havana. Our full-schedule of engagement activities includes a visit to a local farm where they grow various fresh fruits and vegetables, walking and driving tours of the city, and presentations of how to eat healthy in an urban environment.

We’ll answer your questions about Cuban life, history, and culture, review our itinerary, and prepare for our adventures on the island. *In the evening, explore the city or use our Diaspora Nightlife Guide for tips on bars, restaurants, clubs, and other local hotspots to experience in Cuba.

Day 4

Burn calories, get energized, and take in the Havana city sights with a morning run. Learn about the Afro-Cuban spiritual practice Regla de Ochá - Santería during a presentation and discussion with a Babalao (“Babalawo” a Priest) in route to and on a local beach. Regla de Ochá is the Cuban synchronization of the Yoruba religion and culture — brought by the Yoruba people of West Africa during the Transatlantic Slave Trade — and Catholicism. Unwind by the seashore and learn about Yemayá, the female Orisha (diety) of the Oceans, as the Babalao performs a Yemayá offering and blessing ceremony.
